Sunday, 18 April, 09 – The Earth Day was brought into Kolkata with a phenomenal theater performance by rural artists, followed by a cycle ride with over 60 cyclists riding from Victoria memorial around Jetty along the Gangas and then Maidan to show the city dwellers the sustainable mode of transportation organized by –- Vivekananda Shakti Kendra and Kolkata cycling club and supported by Earth Day Network, Public Relations Society of India and Environment Press.in

The rural theater artists highlighted the plight faced by earth due to our unsustainable practices and insatiable consumption patterns and proposed the need to reduce our consumption and switch to renewable energy and tree plantation as the biggest solutions to combat the sustainability and environment crisis.

“It is critical to take action at a time when 2/3rd of india does not have access to clean and reliable energy – India is in the middle of the severe energy crisis” says Ekta Ktohari, Co-founder Vivekananda Shakti Kendra. Vivekanada Shakti Kendra (VSK) is a Renewable Energy Venture operating in Kolkata & South 24 parganas promoted by VSSU and ONergy. VSK is deploying lighting and electriication solutions in rural and semi urban india. ” Decentralised Renewable Energy is non polluting, sustianble and equitable. It is the only way forward”, says Vinay Jaju Co-founder Vivekananda Shakti Kendra.

Members of Kolkata Cycling Club and People from different walk of life participated in the cycle rally – comprising both Students and Professionals. “Cycling is the smarter, healthier, efficient more sustainable and fun way to commute. Especially now, since we’re fast running our of oil,” says Piyush Jaju, Co-founder Kolkata Cycling Club.

The Theatre Road Show traveled from Victoria to other parts of the City – – Jaghu Bazaar, Tollygunj and will be showcased in different parts of South 24 Parganaz over the next few months, with the purpose to spread the awareness across West Bengal.
