On the occasion of World Environment Day, Graduates Welfare Association Fazilka (GWAF) fixed up all the open water-supply connections with PVC Taps. Household survey conducted by the students of Environment Club, Dost Model School in the three suburban localities of  Fazilka namely Nai Abadi, Teacher Coloney and Dhingra Coloney, detected 63 such open connections. Such open connections were not just reducing discharge pressure but  were also wasting almost 70% of the fresh water. Low household income in these sub urban localities is the another reason as why after damage such connection remain damaged or open.

Reduction in discharge pressure made difficult to store this water and encouraged few individual to install Tullu Pumps in the main pipeline. Further loss of energy and reduce the water supply to the few household falling on same main pipeline. Overall loss of Energy and Water

Hence, today on the occasion of World Environment Day the team GWAF installed PVC taps (low cost, durable and theft proof) on these open connections. Therefore on an average Municipality supply monthly about 7000 litre of fresh water per connection, out of which 70% was going wasted as surface runoff shall be conserved. With this small initiative an estimate of 3 lakh litre fresh will be saved monthly. Talking about this project Mr Rishab Khanna, Funding Director of Indian Youth Climate Network (IYCN) said, “each individual can takeup such small initiatives in their neighborhood and we need to save this precious water for our next generations may be in the form of small contribution”. He also proposed to promote this initiative on pan India basis through IYCN network.
Scenario is the same in other sub urban localities of Fazilka, line Anni Dilli, Nand Lal Coloney, jattian & jhivar Mohalla. GWAF also urge the individual and other social organisations of Fazilka to takeup this call. “Repair of each open connection would not cost more than the cost 1 mineral water cane, but there is a huge saving of water associated with it”, said Mrs Meenu Kamra, brainchild behind this initiative. “Due to our negligence and greedy deeds of few, we have already lost our main water sources like Badha lake wetland and ground water table is already depleting. This is a need of hour and if we will not act now, time is not far away when again Fazilka would be the part of Thar Desert”, said Dr Bhupinder Singh, Patron GWAF and retired professor, IIT Roorkee. Act Now and Save Water.

Delhi city produces around 8,000 MT of solid waste. If you are wondering if this is an annual figure, please hold your breath and then proceed to read the next few words : “Delhi produces 8,000 MT of solid waste DAILY“. Also note that 1 MT = 1,000 kg. I do not want to even get into multiplying this figure by the number of days in a year and arrive at an annual figure, for my counting abilities are only so limited. Out of this, only 60% of the waste is collected and the remaining is dumped on the Delhi roads.
However, if you are reading this, you would react in one of the following ways,

a) Oh My God! So much waste! We must do something about it

b) Oh My God! So much waste! But why should only I do something about it?

c) Oh My God! So much waste! But even if I do my bit, how much difference is it going to make?

d) Kya farak padta hai yaar, kaun sa ye kooda mere ghar mein aa raha hai?

If you choose  a), I can proudly say that you are amongst those few who believe in the idea of a healthy future. To them I would say, keep doing the good work friends; this is just the beginning of a journey.

However, if you choose any of the remaining three options; CONGRATULATIONS! – because you are not alone. You are joined by millions of people across the city/country who think the same. The only thing which these people do not realize is that if all these million souls choose to think positively for the environment, their collective thoughts and the corresponding actions will reverse all the environmental impacts within a span of a few days.

Any journey, however, needs a captain. For the journey towards a clean city, I have certainly found one in Let’s Do It Delhi initiative by Anita Bhargava and team. Lets Do It Delhi is a people’s initiative and its objective is to achieve a unified action involving all the citizens of this wonderful city resulting in cleaning Delhi of its entire mess. i-dream was proud to collaborate with Lets Do It Delhi in organizing a School Clean Up Day on 7 May, 2010.  i-dream is a venture  which  works in the field of content development and delivery in the field of environment for schools/college/corporate,  besides providing services like waste auditing, energy auditing, recycle paper products etc. They  also organize events and campaigns to create awareness about different issues of environment. The organization’s web is www.simplygreens.com and the blog link is www.simplygreens.blogspot.com.Students from New State Academy, Pitam Pura, and Modern Public School, Shalimar Bagh were amongst the 5,000 students who participated in the campaign.

Skeptics might ask how much difference it would have made to the city. It may not be much when it comes to calculating the amount of waste collected but the impact in terms of sensitizing the young generation was extremely significant. Also, through these young kids, we were able to reach out to even larger number of people with the message of a litter-free Delhi.

However, this is just the beginning. Over the period of the year 2010, Lets Do It Delhi will take this drive to even larger places in Delhi and involve more and more people. I urge all of you to take the Anti Litter Pledge by logging onto http://www.letsdoitdelhi.org/ and help make this city a world class city.

So c’mon, I am sure none of you wants to live in a filthy, stinking society. Go ahead and the MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE!

SAFE aspired to make this day as an eye opener to all stakeholders of East Kolkata Wetlands, so that its immense significance in biodiversity richness and climate change are highlighted and awareness builds up in them. Today’s East Kolkata Wetlands are vanishing at an alarming rate of 1% per year and is being severely threatened by urban encroachment. This year too, SAFE received an enormous community response that called on combating the challenge of climate change by saving the precious Ramsar site. The event took place in Natar Bheri Fishermen’s cooperative at East kolkata Wetlands, where the ecotorism hub and wetland awareness center has been installed by SAFE under the aegis of the first BIORIGHTS project of India.
